Obituary

Cassiel died a 5:00 this evening.

Wednesday afternoon.........not good.

I am afraid the little guy is dying. He slept untill he fell over. He is in a basket next to me now. He is weak, cant stand. Hard to understand when just this morning he was pecking at the coco palm. He didnt eat his second meal today, or his third........

I have turned the cam off. Thans for all your good wishes.
I am very sad. His parent obviously knew - but I feel I gave hima couple couple days, a chance to be a woodpecker......

Wednesday Morning . June 22

Cassiel is the one who slept late today. I went out to feed him at about 6:30 and he was still sleeping. He sleeps bothe attached low to the coco palm trunk (vertically) and sometimes onthe floor with his head turned and rested on his back.

He actually didnt wake until about 7:30 - after it had been light for maybe 21/2 hours. Good sleeper, good eater.

Food

The tortilla masa he like just fine. Some have suggested he needs some protein too. In the wild they eat insects, works, fruit, nuts.....I looked for Gerber in town, nothing with meat anywhere, Carol is sending me some from Tepic. She also suggested just a little hamburger. Better idea than canned cat or dog food - maybe too strong? I dont like the idea of feeding him chicken. Feed the bird bird? No.

Joy from Massachusets suggests:

"....love the fallen angel for it's name..you have a huge , or had a huge trail of ants active across the road leading to your place.. very active a night..i know the woodpeckers up here go after our ants with delight... that might be an easy source of food for you to offer...maybe take him out to the source...before he can fly....or somehow get the ants to march into a to-go container.. and bring them home...[ i can see your to-do list now... bleach, toilet paper... oh yeah.. ants..]
anyway.. thanks so much for sharing... makes my day!!!!

Hmmm, this could get complcated.
Any suggestions, please post here.

Whats in a name?

A chat with my brother......

... now if I only understood about his name........... off to "google"

gtsjorge: is this it? Cassiel is a patron Angel for the investor, stock broker, or gambler. ... Cassiel rules over the elements of Earth and salt and the metal lead....

gtsjorge: OR this? Cassiel, Angel of Temperance, we are all fallen angels but only some of us have wings.

gtsjorge: http://www.babynamesworld.com/meaning_of_Cassiel.html
gtsjorge: We've come to bring you home

Haven't we, Cassiel?

To cast aside your loss and all of your sadness
And shuffle off that mortal coil and mortal madness
For we're here to pick you up and bring you home
Aren't we, Cassiel?

It's a place where you did not belong
Where time itself was mad and far too strong
Where life leapt up laughing and hit you hear on and hurt you
Didn't it hurt you, Cassiel?

While time outran you and trouble flew toward you
And you were there to greet it
Weren't you, foolish Cassiel?

But here we are, we've come to call you home
And here you'll stay, never more to stray
Where you can kick off your boots of clay
Can't you, Cassiel?

For death and you did recklessly collide
And time ran out of you, and you ran out of time
Didn't you, Cassiel?

gtsjorge: And all the clocks in all the world
May this once just skip a beat in memory of you
But then again those damn clocks, they probably won't
Will they, Cassiel?

One moment you are there
Then strangely you are gone
But on behalf of us all here
We're glad to have you home
Aren't we, dear Cassiel?

NICK CAVE AND THE BAD SEEDS - "Cassiel's Song" lyrics

gtsjorge: OR: http://www.marshallmint.com/angels/cassiel.html

quintacal: Wow Geo - all cool stuff. I thought of it from one of my favorite movies of all time: Wings of Desire. There was a sequal (both germen) called "so close, so far away". A real bad Hollywood version was made of "Wings" with Nicolas Cage and Meg Ryan. Here is the official movie site of the original: http://www.wim-wenders.com/movies/movies_spec/wingsofdesire/wingsofdesire.htm

gtsjorge: ok!

quintacal: ...and yes the movies are about a fallen angel...

gtsjorge: Ohhh OK - I saw this once - not from the bweginning and always wondered about it - now I know thnks to the sapsucker!!!

quintacal: Wow - and Saturday is the day he first fell - our Cassiel
gtsjorge: and the sublime combination of coffee and cigarettes.....

June 21 - First Day of Summer

I put a slab of the trunk of a cocco palm in his cage this morning. He immediately went to work on it. Peck, peck, pec. Now, I notice throughout the day he like to "stand" on it vertically, just as I found him this morning on the little branch. Woodpeckers dont perch.

I woke up kinda late this morning. I did run out to feed him. WOW - was he hungry.....

June 20

Cassiel is eating very well a masa (a corn flour dough for tortillas) very well and with ¡Gusto!
Our french guest sugested puting an upright branch in his cage after I explained how I was teaching him balance on my finger. I was teaching him to perch. Woodpeckers dont perch!!!!

He continued to eat very well about every three hours. He attacks my finger, which have the flour clumped around them - only to discover - "Hey! Thats food!"

Introduction

On June 19 this little guy fell from his nest from the big tree in the Quinta California Courtyard. I place him back in his nest and he seemed to be accepted by his parents. However, 24 hours later we found him on the ground again.

Rescued from the dangers of Miss Maple and Rudolph we placed him in this large cage and hung it by the base of the tree hoping it parents might fly down and feed him. He is strong, but cannot fly. Seems the arrangment of his tail feathers makes it clumsy to walk as well. I put masa de tortilla on my fingers and he attacks them, only to discover its food. He eats very vigorously. His parents have not really responded to him, we believe he may have been ejected from the nest. He has two pecked marks, one behind his neck and the other where a wing is attached.
